Proudly celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture

11 October 2024

Bonnyrigg Sensory Garden was the perfect setting for a NAIDOC Week celebration bringing together the local Vietnamese community and members of the Bonnyrigg Aboriginal community including local Aboriginal Elders.

There was a Smoking Ceremony and traditional dance performances following a Welcome to Country performed by proud Wiradjuri woman Maureen Clayton, attendees then took part in traditional crafts and other activities. Senior members of the SGCH Vietnamese community created Indigenous designs with sand art and painted boomerangs alongside Aboriginal children.
There was a display of Indigenous arts and crafts including woven baskets, dolls, artworks and clay pieces.

A feast of Indigenous foods included Kangaroo salad with Rosella Flower dressing, Crocodile & Lemon Myrtle crunchy noodle salad, Yam and Warringal greens, and even Spicy Emu sausage rolls.

Attendees also collected tote bags featuring the Connected Communities artwork designed for SGCH by First Nations artist Alysha Menzel and What’s On newsletters and took home the sand art and painted boomerangs they worked on, along with a greater understanding of First Nations culture.
