Speaking about the Albanese Government’s commitment to building affordable housing, Scott Langford, CEO of SGCH, NSW’s largest community housing provider commented,
“We welcome the announcement from Minister Julie Collins that the Government will unlock up to $575 million to deliver social and affordable housing.
In the days prior to this announcement, the Jobs and Skills Summit recognised the importance of affordable housing as an enabler of a well-functioning labour market. Well located and affordable housing allows workers to live close to their place of employment as well as move between regions to plug skill gaps. It will also provide housing for migrant workers when caps are lifted.
Minister Collins’ announcement is the first step in implementing the housing agenda announced by the Commonwealth Government. Commonwealth leadership on housing can drive partnering across all levels of government, the private sector, institutional investors, and community housing providers to deliver more homes and better housing outcomes for more Australians.
Such private and public sector partnership is crucial. Last week we also saw the Treasurer signal the importance of attracting super funds and large institutional investors to help develop new asset classes that include social housing.
As NSW’s largest community housing provider, we know that this is a problem that is large enough to require a combined solution from Government, community housing providers and the private sector, reducing the burden on any one party. Providers like SGCH are increasingly bringing together capital and capability to alleviate the housing shortage. Our recent partnership with Lighthouse Infrastructure has resulted in 100 new units of housing close to Westmead and our award-winning Gibbons Street development has provided an affordable home for over 300 people, many of whom work in the inner city.
Affordable housing is the foundation of a strong economy and thriving communities, allowing Australians to stay connected to their communities, training, education, and employment.
